Trattoria da Mario

Roman home cooking, one family, since 1958. Six tables became twelve, the recipes never changed, and the oven has not been cold since 1974.

Three generations, one kitchen

Mario Bassi opened this room in 1958 with six tables, one stove and his mother's notebook of recipes. He cooked what the market had that morning and wrote the menu on a chalkboard by the door.

His granddaughter Chiara runs the pass today. The chalkboard is still there, the notebook is in a drawer behind the till, and the tagliatelle is still rolled by hand before service.

What guests say

“We came in out of the rain with no booking and left three hours later feeling like family. The ragù is worth the trip on its own.”

Elena R., Rome

“Small room, paper tablecloths, and the best ossobuco I have eaten anywhere. Ask Sofia what to drink with it and just say yes.”

Tom H., London
